Where it all began

The urn was born here

The most famous trophy in cricket started at a Christmas party on this estate. Every summer, Rupo plays on the same estate.

  1. 24 Dec 1882

    A Christmas Eve match

Ivo Bligh's touring England team spent Christmas at Rupertswood, the Sunbury estate of Sir William and Lady Janet Clarke, and played a social game against a team of locals.

  2. The urn

    "The Ashes of English cricket"

Afterwards Lady Clarke presented Bligh with a tiny urn said to hold the ashes of a burnt bail. The exact story has been debated ever since, even by Bligh and his wife.

  3. 1884

    A Rupertswood wedding

Bligh married Florence Morphy, governess and music teacher at Rupertswood. After his death in 1927 she gave the urn to the MCC, and it has lived at Lord's ever since.

  4. 1990

    Rupertswood Cricket Club

More than a century later the club was formed at Salesian College Rupertswood, on the same estate, and has grown into one of the biggest clubs in the GDCA.
